He played in the Koshien tournament while at Enogawa High School (now Iwami Chisuikan), and after graduating, he joined the Yokohama Taiyo Whales (now Yokohama DeNA Baystars) as the first draft pick. In 1998, he won the Best Nine, Golden Glove Award, and Best Battery Award, contributing greatly to the team's victory in Japan. In 2002, he transferred to the Chunichi Dragons. He was selected to represent Japan in the WBC in 2006, and achieved 2,000 hits in 2013. He became a player-manager in the 2014 season, and announced his retirement in 2016. He has played in a total of 3,021 games (the highest in NPB history), and has hit home runs for 27 consecutive seasons, a figure that is registered in the Guinness World Records. After retiring from the Chunichi Dragons in 2016, he has worked as a commentator and commentator in various media.
