A touch of nostalgia. From fishing village to Baltic Sea resort. Warnemünde's history began right here. Warnemünde's Old Stream is an atmospheric promenade located directly on the arm of the Warnow of the same name. Walkers here can still feel the atmosphere of the former fishing village with its captain's houses, quaint pubs and fishing boats moored on the banks. In its early history, Warnemünde was a tranquil fishing village whose structure was limited to the essentials. At that time, only two rows of houses characterized the townscape: the Vörreeg, the front row, which was right on the water, and the Achterreeg, the back row, a little away from the action. These two characteristic rows of houses have stood the test of time and are still an integral part of Warnemünde's townscape today. Experience the maritime flair of the Old Stream, where past and present meet in a special way. The fishermen's houses, which were built by the first inhabitants of the fishing village, are still inhabited by Warnemünde's original inhabitants. Some houses are also rented out as holiday apartments. Warnemünde Lighthouse On the west side of the harbor entrance, about 200 meters from Warnemünde beach, stands the landmark of the Baltic Sea resort: the Warnemünde lighthouse. It is one of the most popular attractions for visitors who spend their vacation in Rostock or directly in the Baltic Sea resort of Warnemünde. At the end of the 13th century, the expansion of the harbor was planned, because Rostock was considered the most influential city of the Hanseatic League at the time. As part of this, a lighthouse was also to be built. However, it is not known today whether there was actually a permanent lighthouse at this location in the years up to 1800. In 1836, a permanent lantern with a height of 11.35 meters was erected. The lighthouse in its current form was built in 1898. The builder of the lighthouse in Warnemünde is considered to be the harbor construction director Karl Friedrich Kerner (1847-1920). A plaque at the foot of the building commemorates him.
