To mobilize the entire society for war, elites, especially political ones, must set an example, says sociologist, Professor Yevhen Holovakha, reflecting on the popular (or even populist) idea of deputies in the trenches. “In every country there are elites – these are people who occupy the highest levels of society. Once upon a time, such levels were occupied by the so-called aristocrats. How did the aristocrats manage to mobilize the masses? They were the first to go (to war – ed.),” says the professor, and immediately admits: the Ukrainian elite, for the most part, does not demonstrate a willingness to defend the country. This is probably one of the roots of the mobilization problems, says Holovakha. Yevhen Holovakha is the director of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. For two years in a row, Radio Liberty has met with the professor at the same time – a few days before the new year – to sum up the passing year and outline the contours of the future – at least the nearest one. Last year, Holovakha explained in detail the phenomenon of Valeriy Zaluzhny's popularity, comparing the general to a "mother hen" and Ukrainians to "chicks". This time we talk about Zaluzhny's chances of becoming president and discuss the prospects of the current head of state. The professor notes: after the war, or at least its acute phase, is over, Zelensky may become a "scapegoat" on whom people will prefer to shift their grief.
