Wangen im Allgäu is hosting the Baden-Württemberg State Garden Show in 2024. So it makes sense to pay a visit to the historic town on the Upper Argen. The second largest town in the Ravensburg district with 27,000 inhabitants was first mentioned in documents in 815 and was elevated to the status of an imperial city in 1286. Despite three major city fires, the old town forms a picturesque, closed ensemble with buildings from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period. The town hall with its baroque façade and the Pfaffenturm and the Catholic parish church of St. Martin characterize the face of the market square. Three still existing city gates were part of the historic city fortifications. Outside the medieval city wall lies the former cemetery, which was built in 1521 during a plague epidemic based on Italian models. The lower town, located on the banks of the Argen, was only enclosed by a city wall from the 15th century onwards. The weekly market has been held in the center of Wangen's old town since 1150 and is still an institution in the city's life today with many stalls selling fruit, vegetables, flowers, meat, cheese, basketry, brushes and other products. On the edge of the old town, we enter the site of the 2024 State Garden Show through one of three entrances, which extends over an area of 46 hectares along the banks of the Upper Argen. In the green oasis, locals and visitors can do sports or simply relax in the midst of flowering meadows. An observation tower in an innovative wooden construction offers a comprehensive view of the site, the old town and the Alpine panorama. At the end we come to the buildings of the former ERBA cotton spinning and weaving mill, which provided work and a home for over 1000 people for more than 130 years.
