※The origin of Saba Daishi※ A long time ago, probably about 1200 years ago, Kukai was training around here. One morning, he was hungry and asked a passing horseman if he could have one of the salted mackerel in his cargo, but the horseman sweared at him and refused. When the horseman came to a place called Umabikizaka, his horse suddenly began to suffer, and when the horseman saw what was happening, he realized that the monk he had sweared at earlier was Kukai, and turned pale. I hurried back, handed over the mackerel, and apologised profusely to Kukai, asking him to somehow make the horse healthy. Kukai then gave the horse some blessed water called kaji-mizu, which made the horse healthy, and the salted mackerel the horseman was carrying also came back to life and swam away. The horseman, seeing this, did not get depressed and say, "My mackerel..." Instead, he had a change of heart and built a hermitage on this land, making it a sacred place to save people. Since then, a legend has been passed down that if you abstain from eating mackerel for three years and then visit this land, your wishes will come true, your illnesses will be cured, and everyone will become happy.
