An island in the East China Sea, about 27km north of the main island of Okinawa. There are three uninhabited islands in the vicinity: Gushikawajima, Yanahajima, and Kogamijima. The island is surrounded by reefs, and five settlements, Izena, Uchihana, Serikyaku, and Nakata, are dotted along the coast. The gently sloping land stretches from east to west, centered on the mountains that connect Mt. Chijin and Mt. Ono, both 120m above sea level, where sugarcane is cultivated, and rice farming is also thriving. It is also known as Okinawa's leading producer of cultivated mozuku seaweed. The surrounding uninhabited islands are meccas for camping, diving, and fishing. It is widely known as the birthplace of King Sho En, the founder of the second Sho dynasty of the Ryukyu Dynasty, and has many cultural assets, history, and nature.
