We arrived early in Osorno. First we stopped by the Municipal Market to have breakfast. Then we walked around the city a bit. The day was cloudy, a bit cold and the wind was constant. On a personal note: we went to see my great-grandparents' house, as seen in the video. When I was a child I spent some time in that house with my grandfather and great-aunts (tanten). It was a very beautiful house with a garden full of flowers. Every corner of the house showed memories of the family past. Other relatives who were my grandfather's cousins had their houses on the block, now those houses have been transformed into businesses and restaurants. Unfortunately, today, the house is abandoned and you can see how it has been deteriorating little by little. Osorno is a city located in the south of Chile, in the Los Lagos Region. It is the capital of the Osorno Province and is located on the banks of the Rahue and Damas rivers. Some highlights of the city include its architecture, its importance as a commercial center and its proximity to beautiful natural landscapes. This city was founded on March 27, 1558 by the Spanish captain Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza who gave it the name Villa de San Mateo de Osorno. Osorno was not populated for a long time because Huilliche Indians destroyed it in uprisings against foreigners. Under the command of Ambrosio O'Higgins, the city of Osorno was rebuilt, and in 1796 it was officially declared repopulated. Over time, German and Austro-Hungarian settlers arrived to this territory and settled in these places. Now Osorno is a mix of descendants of Europeans, mestizos, and the Huilliche people who are the original people in this territory. Some places of interest in Osorno include the San Mateo Cathedral, which is an important architectural landmark; the Plaza de Armas, a central place in the city; and the Fort Reina Luisa, a historical site dating back to Spanish colonization which we did not visit. Osorno is also known for its role as an agricultural and livestock center, with significant production of dairy products. Additionally, the city is located in a picturesque region, with lakes, rivers and mountains offering opportunities for outdoor activities and tourism. ***** We arrived early in Osorno.
