No. Whoever calls Mary the Mother of God thereby confesses that her son Jesus is God. When early Christianity debated who Jesus was, the title Theotokos ("she who gives birth to God") became the hallmark of the Orthodox interpretation of Holy Scripture: Mary had not only given birth to a man who after his birth would have "become" God, but already in her womb her son is the true Son of God. In this question it is not primarily about Mary, but again about whether Jesus is at the same time true God and true man. Question 83: What does the "Immaculate Conception of Mary" mean? The Church believes that "the Blessed Virgin Mary was preserved immune from all stain of original sin from the first instant of her conception by a singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race" (Dogma of 1854; DOGMA). Faith in the "Immaculate Conception" of Mary has existed from the beginning of the Church. Today, this expression is sometimes misunderstood. It means that God preserved Mary from original sin, and from the very beginning. But it says nothing about the conception of Jesus in Mary's womb. And in no way is it a belittling of sexuality in Christianity, as if husband and wife were "defiled" when they give birth to a child. Question 84: Was Mary only an instrument of God? Mary was much more than a mere passive instrument of God. It was also through her active consent that the Incarnation of God was accomplished. To the angel who told her that she would bear the "Son of the Most High," Mary replied: "Let it be done to me according to your word" (Lk 1:38). The salvation of humanity through Jesus Christ therefore begins with a request from God, with the free consent of a person, and with a pregnancy before Mary was married to Joseph. Through these very unusual paths, Mary became for us the "door of salvation." Question 85: Why is Mary also our mother? Mary is our mother because Christ, the Lord, gave her to us as a mother. “Woman, behold, your son!” “Behold, your mother!” (Jn 19:26b27a). In these words that Jesus addressed to John from the cross, the Church has always understood that Jesus entrusted the entire Church to Mary. In this way, Mary is also our mother. We can invoke her and implore her intercession before God. #CatholicPrayer #GospelOfTheDay #Meditation
