We compare the first Volkswagen R, a Golf R32 from 2003, with the new Golf R 20th Anniversary, which celebrates two decades of the “R” saga. In 2002, the first R was born, the Golf R32, and to provide more performance, it abandoned the traditional 4-cylinder engine in favor of a 6-cylinder with 241 hp. It used all-wheel drive and also innovated by introducing the DSG dual-clutch gearbox for the first time. The new Golf R 20th Anniversary brings back the 4-cylinder engine, but with its turbo it claims 333 hp. It also has all-wheel drive and features the latest evolution of the DSG gearbox.
