Volunteering and civic engagement are important pillars of society and also play a decisive role in shaping the cityscape in Görlitz. Numerous clubs, social institutions and initiatives are supported by the commitment of citizens who voluntarily invest time, energy and knowledge. Whether in cultural work, in the social sector, in sports or in work with senior citizens - everywhere it is evident how important volunteering is in enriching and shaping the everyday life of the city. An important part of citizen participation in Görlitz are the citizens' councils. They consist of three to seven volunteers and represent the people of the respective participation area. Residents should have the opportunity to help shape their living environment themselves. To this end, the city is divided into eight participation areas, each of which has a fixed budget of 1 euro per resident. This money is used to implement projects with the participation of the citizens. In 2024, for example, a basketball hoop was added to the Augustastrasse football field, a fairy tale evening was organized in Nikolaivorstadt, the wall on Else-Puschmann-Weg was given a new design and a mobile youth meeting point was created in collaboration with the A-Team. Citizens' council elections will take place again in March and April 2025. Anyone who wants to get involved in their district and actively help decide which projects are implemented can stand for election. The prerequisite is that you live in the district and are at least 16 years old. The citizens' councils are elected for three years. Anyone who would like to run for office or has any questions can contact the Citizens' Participation Coordination Office at [email protected] or 03581 672000.
