Every year a special natural phenomenon can be seen above the Biesbosch (region). The scarce purple herons leave their colonies en masse. They do this in the evening between mid-August and mid-September. They leave mainly with the north wind in their backs. Tonight (26 August) seems to be such an evening. Above Kinderdijk and the Zouweboezem (near Ameide) groups of purple herons circle to finally leave our country in straight lines via the Biesbosch. They are on their way to the Sahel (Africa) where they spend the winter. I made a VLOG of one of the summer evening counts that we carry out with the volunteers of the Bird Working Group Biesbosch.
