After climbing Mt. Koya, our group safely arrived at the Daimon Gate. Although we were much later than scheduled, Mr. Takai Tomohiro Kamiami of Seiganji Temple, a semi-special head temple of Mt. Koya, waited until late and guided us to the Konpon Daito. The Konpon Daito is said to have been completed between 816 and 887, taking two generations of the Great Master and Shinzen Daitoku. The Great Master also called this tower the Hokkai Taisei Tower, and it has been called Konpon Daito since ancient times because it was built as a symbol of the main training hall of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. It is said to be the first pagoda in Japan in this style. The principal image is the Taizo Dainichi Nyorai Buddha, surrounded by the four Buddhas of the Diamond Realm. The 16 pillars are decorated with paintings of the 16 great bodhisattvas by the master painter Domoto Insho, and the four corner walls are decorated with images of the eight patriarchs who spread esoteric Buddhism.
