Overcrowded waiting rooms, overworked staff and patients' emotional states of emergency are increasingly leading to conflicts. The increasing number of violent crimes reported in Berlin emergency rooms last year illustrates the seriousness of the situation. That is why the Jewish Hospital in Wedding is breaking new ground: doctors and nurses there are being trained by an experienced de-escalation trainer. In training sessions, martial artist Danièl Lautenschlag teaches techniques for the early detection and defusing of potential dangers - from verbal de-escalation to simple defensive grips. The deputy head of the emergency room, Dr. Kalaivanan reports on daily challenges and experiences with violent patients. Until now, her motto was to run away when things got tough. She is open to the training, even if she has to overcome inhibitions. Nurse Andreas Ottmann takes us on a night shift in the emergency room and reports on many situations that escalate. As a participant in the training, he is skeptical as to whether the exercises can actually help him in an emergency. Most recently, the New Year's Eve attack 2024 on a doctor and a nurse in the Sana Clinic by a patient and his brothers, captured by a surveillance camera, triggered a wave of outrage.
