For the English, the objective of the day was the city of Caen; an important road hub that they could use to continue their advance into France, but that same day their advance towards that city was stopped. Six days later the British attempted to carry out a flanking maneuver with their 7th Armored Division, passing behind the rear of the German Panzer-Lehr division and planning to arrive at the town of Villers-Bocage to crumble the enemy defenses.
