The year was 1861 and Dom Pedro II, his family and a delegation that included journalists and photographers were leaving Petrópolis for the city of Juiz de Fora, in the state of Minas Gerais. The imperial family was traveling to celebrate the inauguration of the first macadamized road in Latin America, the União e Indústria, designed and built by engineer Mariano Procópio Ferreira Lage. There they would be welcomed by the Ferreira Lage family in a residence built specifically for that occasion. Villa Ferreira Lage was located on top of a hill on Mariano Procópio's farm, where the family spent their summers. In total, the house had 14 rooms, spread over 2 floors, a turret and a basement. The building, inspired by the Italian Renaissance, was designed by German architect Carl August Gambs. The documentary portrays, through the narration of historian Sérgio Augusto Vicente, the most diverse aspects of this residence, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of its restoration process.
