The National People's Army of the GDR did not survive the marriage between enemies. The party army was swallowed up in full armor by the Bundeswehr and scrapped. But what apparently went so smoothly as a peaceful union of warring brothers in complete silence left scars in the East German landscape. The small town of Eggesin, a garrison town on the Polish border, had lived off the NVA during the GDR era. They only trained as soldiers and had made their career plan without the fall of the Berlin Wall: Ingolf Hartlmeier once dreamed of becoming a commander in Eggesin. But three days before German reunification he received his discharge papers. Today he keeps his old uniform as a reminder of a homeland that once was the GDR...
