The story takes place in a small town in the north of Moldova. Costea Moceanu, a rich and unscrupulous man, wants to marry Carmen Anta, who is a teenager, at any cost. The girl is in love with Octav Soimu, the nephew of Dr. Micu. To achieve his goal, Moceanu uses different strategies, ending up offering Octav money or a well-paid job abroad. At the same time, he also blackmails Ana Anta, Carmen's aunt, who owes him money. Carmen, understanding that the only way out of this impasse was to marry the rentier Moceanu, commits suicide with the gun that Octav had brought with him to defend himself.
