Vice President (Wapres) Gibran Rakabuming accompanied by Acting Governor of South Sulawesi Zudan Arif Fakrulloh, Acting Regent of Maros Suhartina Bohari, and Head of Butta Salewangang Maros (BSM) People's Market Abd. Rasak, visited the BSM People's Market on Thursday, November 14, 2024. In this market that carries the concept of a modern traditional, the Vice President saw how the combination of traditional and modern concepts was able to improve the quality of market facilities and more professional governance, while maintaining the authenticity of traditional market interactions. In addition, with centralized management, this market not only arranges the layout of stalls and kiosks neatly, but also begins to support technological payment systems, such as non-cash. The Vice President assessed that the concept of a modern traditional market is good management. This concept allows local farmers' harvests and MSME products to be distributed directly, thus having a positive impact on the regional economy. This is also in line with President Prabowo Subianto's direction to ensure the implementation of a people-based economy by strengthening traditional markets. Where, traditional market traders are the link and intermediary between farmers and producers and consumers in the wider community. One of the daily necessities traders, Dewi Mutia, explained that through the implementation of the modern traditional system at the BSM People's Market, the community is facilitated in meeting their needs. "Here the concept is modern traditional, so it is more organized and the goods are complete," said Dewi. The market, which was built in 2015 and began operating in 2017, is occupied by approximately 80 shophouses, 701 kiosks, and 560 trader stalls. The goods traded in this market are also diverse, ranging from food commodities, clothing, and other daily necessities. The Vice President hopes that in the future, the concept of a modern traditional market like this can be applied more widely in other regions in Indonesia, especially outside Java, as a strategic step to improve the welfare of local traders and farmers, as well as provide a better shopping experience for the community.
