From the crazy baroque fantasy structures to the luxurious apartments of the courtiers and the king's private museum: today's Versailles hardly resembles the palace of the Sun King. This lost past is currently being researched using the most modern means, such as restoration and digitization of thousands of palace plans. An overview. Under the rule of Louis XIV, Versailles was a constant construction site. Even after that, it was continuously transformed by subsequent residents. As a result, the cultural monument that millions of visitors see today only bears a distant resemblance to the residence of the Sun King. Moreover, it tells nothing about its amazing history. But by using the most modern reconstruction techniques, research has now taken a new lease of life. It reveals the Versailles of Louis XIV as he designed it according to his needs and dreams. The film observes the scientists in their efforts to reconstruct the rooms and furnishings of the lost places and to clarify the history of the palace. Thus, Alexandre Maral, curator of the palace museum, reconstructs the crazy baroque fantasy structures that once filled the park and allows the viewer to explore a wonderful artificial grotto with magical fountains. Mathieu da Vinha, scientific director of the Versailles Research Centre, shows in detail how the large courtiers' apartments were furnished. Matthieu Lett, a specialist in royal collections, can try out the hanging in this very private place in virtual reality thanks to the 3D reconstruction of Louis XIV's private museum. Combined with the study of thousands of old plans, these modern reconstruction techniques allow a completely new exploration of the architectural past of Versailles and reveal its hidden meaning.
