Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov is one of the most prominent Russian artists of the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He is known for his paintings "Moscow Yard", "Grandmother's Garden", "Christ and the Sinner". The latter, by the way, could have been banned altogether, but Emperor Alexander III decided to buy it, thereby having a great influence on the history of Russian art and on the fate of Polenov himself. Vasily Polenov was not only a remarkable artist, but also a teacher. His students adored him. He was not shy about learning something from them and did not limit their creativity, did not drive them into a framework. Art critic Armen Apresyan talks about why Polenov's paintings were compared to Turgenev's prose, what the artist did abroad, how the painting "Christ and the Sinner" was created, and how Polenov's fate turned out.
