He was born on October 22, 1937 in Alexandria and died in a hospital in Moscow, on September 17, 1982. He was involved in music since his student years. During the dictatorship, he was often targeted by the authorities for his left-wing political beliefs. After the Polytechnic University uprising in November 1973, he was arrested and spent 10 days in the security forces' detention center. In his twenty-year musical career, he wrote some of the best Greek songs, collaborating with lyricists Yiannis Negrepontis, Fontas Ladis, Manolis Raoulis, Dimitris Christodoulou and Lefteris Papadopoulos. How is it possible that a singer has "identified" so much with a composer, having recorded only ten of his songs in his personal discography, one of which was a second performance and the other after its creator had passed away? It is possible, if the singer's name is Vassilis Papakonstantinou and the composer is Manos Loizos! As soon as the regime fell, he returned to Greece and immediately signed a contract with "Minos". When asked by the company's managers who he would like to meet and possibly collaborate with, he effortlessly replied "Manos Loizos"! So one evening, Vasilis, together with Theodorakis, goes there and meets Loizos, who listens to him and is enthusiastic. So he gives him "Stratiotis" by Kostoula Mitropoulou and "Third World" by Yannis Negrepontis, two songs that essentially establish in one night the performer with the special and dynamic voice. In the summer of 1981, Vasilis will take part in the composer's tour in Greece and abroad with many concerts that were to be Manos' last... Of course, Vasilis found it impossible not to include songs by Loizos in each of his concerts. In addition to what he had performed in the first performance, he also chose other creations of the composer and presented them in his own way, such as "The Accordion" and "Che", which has since been associated primarily with his own interpretation and is how the younger generations learned about him. Of course, beyond the collaboration in studios and concerts, Manos and Vasilis were connected by a very close friendship that lasted until the end.
