At Vardås on Nøtterøy, the Germans built a giant cannon battery. Here the Allies were to be stopped if they tried to penetrate the Oslofjord. Work began in March 1944, and continued day and night until Germany capitulated on 8 May 1945. Nearby, the Germans set up a large prisoner of war camp with over 900 Soviet prisoners of war. The prisoners were used as slaves under extremely difficult conditions, many suffered from disease and hunger. Those prisoners who were too weak to work were sent to Mellom Bolerne to die. These are the largest cannons that have ever stood in Eastern Norway. At Vardås, there are still tombstones in the forest and graffiti after the prisoners of war in the cement. The facility consists of a number of tunnels and three gigantic cannon emplacements. The whole area bears the mark of the German activity that was here in the last days of the war on Nøtterøy.
