Despite many hardships, Vancouver's Japantown continued to thrive until just before the start of World War II, and grew into one of the largest Japanese towns in North America. During the war, Japanese Canadians were forced to move inland for reasons such as being "enemy aliens," and Vancouver's prosperous Japantown disappeared overnight. The war never brought back the city's former prosperity, and today, with the exception of a few buildings, it is no longer possible to feel the atmosphere of the time.
