And the reason they received those rights was because Woerden resisted the bishop of Utrecht so well. We can no longer imagine that, because Woerden is now in the Province of Utrecht, but until 1989 - that's only 33 years ago! - Woerden has always belonged to South(ally) Holland. And 650 years ago, they were even rewarded for that with city rights.
