Did you know that the Wallachian sheep is also a sheep? Liptov boasts beautiful nature and high mountains. The Wallachian sheep was the only breed of sheep that best coped with the demanding mountain conditions of the region for a long time. For centuries, this sheep adorned local pastures and provided a livelihood not only for its breeders and their families. It did so well that a hundred years ago its number was estimated at three million, but at the end of the new millennium it was threatened with extinction and is now struggling to survive. If it were not for the Wallachian sheep, which arrived in our territory with the Wallachian colonization in the 13th and 14th centuries, Liptov and its surrounding area would perhaps look completely different today. It was this sheep and its shepherds, who set out on a long pilgrimage across the old continent from Romania, that ensured the economic boom of locations such as Slovakia.
