At the end of the 1950s, the large diesel locomotive V180 was put on the tracks in the former GDR. Built by the Karl Marx Babelsberg locomotive factory. Initially, the machines had an output of 1800 hp. By 1970, several series and sub-series were created. The V 180 series, 118 from 1970 and 228 from 1992, was the largest diesel locomotive built in the GDR. The large diesel locomotives were still in scheduled service until the mid-1990s.
