In this tutorial we will see how to make a harmonic substitution, how to replace or complement chords in a progression to improve it, modify the harmonic rhythm and give it variety. Are you looking for a more advanced substitution? Here I teach you the tritonal: • How the tritonal substitution works The PDF of this lesson is the one included in our new course: https://www.mediafire.com/file/ylgu5j... To make a harmonic substitution the first thing is to understand the harmonic functions, in our case we have three, the first is the tonic, in this function the chords are characterized by being stable, by giving balance to the progressions. The second function is the subdominant, this harmonic function works with chords of medium tension degree, they are chords that function as a bridge between the tonics and the dominants. Dominant chords are characterized by being chords that generate tension, chords that seek to return to the point of balance or to the tonic function. Chords of the same function are interchangeable, it is possible to either change them for others or complement them, thus modifying the harmonic rhythm in the songs. In the case of the tonics, the chords we have available are degrees I, iii and vi, these can be changed in the progression, for example if you have: C Dm G The C chord can be changed to Em or Am, the other tonic chords of the scale leaving the progression: Am Dm G This is ideal when the musical piece repeats many sections and you want to give variety to the harmonic cycle. Within the subdominant function to make a harmonic substitution, there are the iim and IV chords, in the previous example the Dm chord could be changed for an F leaving the progression: C F G Within the dominants, the chords that are used for harmonic substitution are the V and the vii°, this last chord when diminished generates even more tension, something ideal for this harmonic function. All the chords of the same harmonic function are interchangeable, this concept is key to giving variety to the harmonic progressions. I hope everyone liked this class.
