This week in an episode of Later als ik Groot ben: working as an urban planner at the municipality of Utrecht. What does an urban planner do? An urban planner tries to make a city as beautiful, safe and practical as possible for all the people who live and work there. They think about how streets, parks, buildings and houses fit together in the best way. What education do you need to become an urban planner? And what is the difference between an urban planner and an architect? You will get answers to these and other questions in this new episode of Later als ik Groot ben… 13-year-old Jens actually wants to become an architect when he grows up. Jens is extremely creative. He loves drawing buildings. According to Jens, an architect mainly works behind the computer. Jens understands that an architect often has to deal with an urban planner. An urban planner looks at the environment of a building and what effect the building has on the environment. That is why Jens is very curious about that profession. Presenter Jochem van Gelder takes Jens to the city of Utrecht. It is the fourth city of our country, with more than 350,000 inhabitants. You can imagine that an urban planner has enough to do here to create a pleasant living and working environment for everyone. A new residential tower is going to be built next to the Central Station. Urban planner Kim gives Jens and Jochem the assignment to do a street survey. They can ask residents questions about what should be in the new residential tower and what it should look like. After Jens has presented the results of his research to Kim, Jens and Jochem are given a Challenge. Like a real urban planner, they can make a model of the residential tower that they want to have on the location in the neighborhood. They also have to think about what should be in the building. That means crafting for the two men. When the time is up, they can place their own model in the large model of the city. After an exciting pitch, it is up to urban planner Kim to determine who has designed the best residential tower. The building is drawn on the computer in a special program. There they look at, among other things, how much shade the building provides on the square and how the wind passes by it.
