When using grassland, the grass that has been mown to produce hay or silage is "laid into swaths" with a swather before being collected with a baler, forage harvester or loading wagon. To do this, a side swather is usually used to swath lengthways and then back again. Alternatively, the swath is laid directly in the middle. In this way, the mown crop is gathered together in rows so that it can be collected later with less work. The same applies to the straw that accrues during the grain harvest, unless it has already been laid in swaths by the combine harvester or had to be raked before the straw was collected due to rain to ensure it dried better. Swather mowers also lay the harvested crop in swaths immediately after cutting. When drying hay, the grass to be dried is also usually laid in swaths again in the evening so that it is not so heavily moistened by rain or night-time dew. Such a night swath can be created not only with the special rake machine, but also with a rotary tedder at a reduced rotor speed. The baler is used to press hay, straw or grass silage that accrues in agriculture into bales. This means that it can be stored in a space-saving manner. Balers are pulled by a tractor and driven by the PTO shaft. Today, round or square bales (weight for hay up to 400 kg/piece, for silage up to over 1000 kg/piece) are mostly pressed. Large square bales can only be moved with the front loader of a tractor, a wheel loader or a telehandler, while round bales can also be rolled over short distances. A bale collector wagon is used to load square or round bales. The bales can be tied either with nets or with twine, with the latter being differentiated between "edge to edge" and "cover edge" (over the edge). A special press is required for each of these two methods. The most common baler is the round baler. This was introduced by the Vermeer Company in 1972.[1] A forerunner of the round baler was introduced by Allis-Chalmers in 1947 with the Roto-Baler, whose bales were, however, significantly smaller.[2] To produce these cylindrical bales, the hay, straw or grass silage is rolled up in a simple way. This is done using rubber-covered belts (press with variable chamber) or steel rollers (fixed chamber press). Once the bale has reached a certain size, it is tied with twine or nets before the rear part of the press opens and the bale can roll out. The bales have a diameter of 90 to 180 cm and are 120 cm wide. The weight is between 200 kg for loosely pressed straw and 1000 kg for grass silage with a dry matter of only 20%. Silage and haylage bales are then packed airtight with the bale wrapper and thus protected from spoilage. Alternatively, there are also balers with an integrated bale wrapper. While Vermeer remains the most important manufacturer in the USA, these presses are now sold in Germany by the manufacturers Case IH, Claas, Deutz-Fahr, Fendt, Göweil, John Deere, Krone, Kubota, Kuhn, Massey Ferguson, McHale, New Holland, Pöttinger and Vicon.
