The three children of the Gantenbein family from Herisau have never spent a second of their lives in school. There are no lessons in the traditional sense at home either - the children learn what they want, whenever they are ready. Nalin (10) spends hours playing with his Playmobil figures, making music and helping a neighboring farmer in the field. In between, he practices English on the computer. Eleven-year-old Olivia is learning Chinese and her older sister Sara (15) is writing a novel - that is everyday life in the house of the unschooler family of Doris and Bruno Gantenbein. "Playing is learning," say the two. School, they and other unschoolers are convinced, would only disrupt the natural process of learning in a child's life. "Unschooling" is the term used to describe child-led learning in a "normal" home and living environment. There are no planned lessons or specific times of the day for which school-like activities are prescribed. Topics are covered when the child's interest requires it. Once a year, the Gantenbein children have to take standardized performance tests. And although they have never seen the inside of a classroom, Sara, Olivia and Nalin pass the tests with good results and minimal preparation time. Reporter Helen Arnet delves into the everyday life of a family in which everything the parents do is geared towards the children.
