Unpacking: Fascism and Nazism in five minutes. SUMMARY: Fascism and Nazism are totalitarian, ultranationalist, anti-communist, anti-liberal movements that emerged in Italy and Germany, respectively, with their leaders justifying their efforts to restore national and economic pride by persecuting minorities. In Italy, fascism emerged through Benito Mussolini in 1919, who understood that during the First World War (1914-1918), the country had been deceived by English promises. In 1922, the March on Rome took place, when the blackshirts took to the streets, demanding power. As a result, King Victor Emmanuel III appointed Mussolini as Prime Minister, and in 1925, he became dictator (Duce). In 1929, the Lateran Treaty was signed, when Pope Pius XI legitimized fascism before the Holy See, receiving in exchange the Vatican as an independent state. In Germany, the Nazi Party, led by Adolf Hitler, increased its number of seats in parliament during the Weimar Republic (1919-1933), until Hitler became Chancellor of the country, and soon after, in July of the same year, unified the positions of president and chancellor, defining the one-party system, and becoming dictator (Führer) and creating the Third Reich.
