Available until 20/11/2026 #USA #Children #ARTE It is a disturbing paradox: the US State Department considers child marriages to be a violation of human rights, the United States has validated the United Nations objective to end these practices by 2030… However, nearly 300,000 child marriages were celebrated in the country between 2000 and 2018. More than 80% were girls, the youngest was 10 years old, the husbands were most often adults. In the United States, minors can still be married in 40 states, or 4/5 of the country. Five states do not even set an age limit, including California. The starting premise that justifies these marriages is simple: “parents know best what is good for their children”. So they are the ones who decide. Their motivations are religious, community or cultural, sometimes economic. Many child marriages thus render the law on rape null and void: the rapist becomes the husband and escapes prison. Others of these unions serve to circumvent immigration laws and obtain a visa for a man from the community, or for a very young girl brought from abroad and who will be reduced to the condition of slavery. Minors and under the thumb of their husbands, these girls have no rights allowing them to escape their condition. Those who escape call themselves "survivors". Among them, in California: Sara Tasneem, Mandy Havlik and Elizabeth Sitton; and in Indiana: Genevieve Meyer, Cathy Lucas and Sasha Taylor. It is they, through their fervent commitment, who are today changing the laws, state after state. Thanks to their advocacy with elected officials, judges and public opinion, 10 states have taken the step and now prohibit all marriage under the age of 18, without any exception. They tell their stories. Subscribe to the ARTE channel / @arte Follow us on social media! Facebook: / artetv Twitter: / artefr Instagram: / artefr
