Electricians and electrical professionals sometimes have trouble understanding grounding schemes. After all, there are several: TN-S grounding scheme; TN-C grounding scheme; TN-CS grounding scheme; TT grounding scheme; IT grounding scheme. It seems that the NBR-5410 standard complicates more than it simplifies. But if we start to understand the fundamental principles of a grounding scheme, it starts to become easier to understand the application limits and the main characteristics of each grounding scheme. In the description of this video, we will try to help by detailing a little more about the TN-S grounding scheme. What do I need to know about the TN-S grounding scheme? There are THREE very important things that you need to know: 1- In the TN-S grounding scheme, the PE protective conductor and the Neutral are separated, that is, there is a conductor for each function. 2- The Neutral conductor and the PE protective conductor are directly or indirectly connected to the BEP; 3- Every ground fault in the TN-S grounding scheme is considered a direct short circuit since the neutral is connected to the PE protective conductor through the BEP. BEP = Main Equipotential Busbar. So, if the Neutral and the protective conductor are indirectly connected, I can consider that if there is a fault current, it will only encounter resistance along the way from the impedance of the cables and will be high enough to trip the protection and disconnection device (circuit breaker). The above statement is true, and there are ways to calculate the impedance of the cables to ensure that the circuit breaker will trip when this fault current occurs. But what if someone comes into contact with this energized housing at the exact moment of the fault? For these cases, there are supplementary protection devices, which are the 30mA IDRs. The standard requires the use of these devices in specific locations such as: wet areas, external areas, etc. Consult the NBR-5410 standard, which gives details of the locations where the use of the IDR as a supplementary protection device is required in the case of using a TN-S grounding scheme. What electricians and electrical professionals sometimes get confused about is thinking that a good grounding is one that will conduct the fault electric current to the ground and this current will disappear into the ground. That is not how it works. When the fault current is directed to the ground, it will always seek to return to the source, and an efficient grounding scheme is one that, when a fault current occurs, this current must disconnect the protection device, indicating that there has been a fault in that circuit. In short, grounding has as one of its objectives to provide a return path to the source for the fault current only so that a protection and sectioning device can perceive this leakage current and act.
