The overload relay, also known as a thermal relay, is well known by electricians and electrical professionals, but sometimes there are still doubts about the correct operation of this device. So let's understand a little more about how the thermal relay works. Did you know that it does not have internal sectioning of the 3 phases? That's right, the thermal relay has dry contacts that only serve as signaling and activation of an auxiliary device that can be a contactor. This auxiliary device is what will open and section the 3 phases. Another important feature is that the thermal relay has an actuation curve. It does not trip instantly as soon as an overload occurs, there is a time for this trip. The tripping time occurs because it senses the overload through the deformation of a bimetallic material (the higher the current, the greater the deformation of this material). When this bimetallic material is deformed, it activates an internal handle of the overload relay that opens the NC contacts and closes the NO contacts. The curve of a thermal relay has some similarity to the curves of circuit breakers. It is important to observe the thermal relay's actuation curve to ensure that it will operate in a time that is not sufficient to damage the load. It is not possible to speak specifically about a thermal relay model because there are a huge number of models and types on the market, so let's basically talk about the functions that practically all of them have: 1) Automatic activation option - The relay trips in case of overload and resets itself without the need for manual resetting; 2) Manual reset option - The operator needs to locally activate the overload relay after it trips; 3) Trip signaling option - A NO or NC contact can be used for remote signaling of relay tripping through a light signal or applications in PLCs, etc. 4) Option to adjust the tripping current; 5) Trip signaling on top of the relay; 6) Test button. It is always ideal to use an overload relay model with a contactor model indicated for use with it. Normally, an overload relay and contactor from the same manufacturer are used because they are made to be perfectly coupled. There are professionals who can use an overload relay from one manufacturer with a contactor from another manufacturer, but always be careful to check if the coupling is perfect.
