Nickel downstreaming is a jargon that President Joko Widodo continues to throw around. The program is often associated with green energy and the transition to electric vehicles, as the government has recently been actively promoting. However, is this downstreaming really green? In Central Halmahera, forests continue to be cut down from year to year for the nickel industry. In recent years, the deforestation rate has skyrocketed. We explored Weda Bay, seeing firsthand how the nickel industry works. Our findings: the water of the Sagea River is polluted with heavy metals, allegedly due to nickel activities in the upstream area. River water, which has long been a source of life for residents, is now difficult to use. The nickel industry makes residents miserable. In Lelilef Village, residents must be exposed to dust caused by the company's activities. They live side by side with the PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) complex. Other impacts since the company's presence: groundwater has become salty, and fishermen have also found it increasingly difficult to catch fish. Not to mention the major flood that hit Weda Bay on July 21, 2024. It is suspected that the company played a role in causing this disaster.
