We recently saw a post in a Facebook group in which a person measured the currents in the phases and neutral of an electrical panel and found it strange that with single-phase circuits connected, the currents in the phases did not match the current in the neutral, that is, the sum of the currents in the phases was not equal to the value of the current found in the neutral. Although this was the question in the post, what caught our attention the most, besides the jokes and criticism, were the statements that it was an electrical panel where the phase balance was not done correctly and for this reason the panel was wrong. Many also classified the question as silly, but in our opinion, a silly question is one that is not asked and often a subject that may seem simple generates discussions and criticism, most of the time coming from those who do not know the correct answer to the question. So, we decided to use this video to answer this question that is still very common in our environment. The first thing we need to understand is that the reason for balancing the phases is to distribute the loads so that the simultaneous use of some of them does not cause the main circuit breaker of my QDC to trip. Let's imagine that I have a three-phase plus neutral power supply. My voltage between phases is 380V and my phase-neutral voltage is 220V. My main circuit breaker is 50A and I am going to connect three 220V/5500W-25A phase and neutral showers to this QDC. If I connect the three showers to phase R and neutral, I would have 75A in this phase and my main circuit breaker would trip. By connecting each shower to one of the phases, I would have 25A in each of them and the load balance would allow them to be used simultaneously. However, at a certain time of day, if I only use one shower and someone decided to measure the currents in my QDC, they would find 25A in one phase and zero in the other two. This characterizes a momentary imbalance, but it does not mean that my QDC was poorly sized or installed. Never forget, no matter how simple a subject may seem to you, we often have people with doubts and an objective and conscious answer will in no way diminish you, but can certainly increase the knowledge of those who need it.
