U-boat U 17: A technical masterpiece on its last journey The U 17 submarine, also known as the S 196, has a fascinating history. After more than 30 years in service with the German Navy, the Type 206 Alpha submarine was decommissioned in 2010. But in 2023, U 17 began one last, exciting journey to the Sinsheim-Speyer Technology Museum. The technical brilliance of U 17 U 17 is a remarkable submarine with impressive technical data: almost 50 meters long, 9 meters high and 500 tons heavy. It was the first German submarine to cross the Atlantic after World War II. This historic voyage underlines the importance and technical capabilities of the 206 Alpha class. A spectacular transport The journey from Kiel to Speyer was a logistical masterpiece. The submarine had to be transported over 1200 kilometers via canals, rivers and finally over land. This transport required the utmost precision and the cooperation of numerous experts, including ocean-going tug captain Jan Frank and the logistics company Kübler. The challenges of demilitarization Before U 17 came to the museum, it had to be demilitarized. This task involved rendering the military equipment unusable to ensure that the submarine could never be used for military purposes again. It was crucial to preserve the historical appearance. Significance for posterity U 17 is the only surviving submarine of the 206 Alpha class and is on display in the Sinsheim-Speyer Technology Museum.
