On April 15, 2019, the fire at Notre-Dame shocked the whole of France. But the restoration of the historic monument has brought back to the surface a deep controversy from the 19th century: what does it mean to restore a monument? What does it mean to preserve our heritage? From Viollet-le-Duc to Ruskin via Boito, we will explore the different doctrines of restoration of the 19th century to understand the nature of Notre-Dame, and more generally the nature of our French heritage.
