Turkey has long been one of the most popular holiday destinations for Germans. In 2019, before Corona, more than five million of the approximately 45 million tourists who visited the country were Germans. "For the money I pay here, I get so much service, that's no longer normal," says a German holidaymaker on the beach in Kemer near Antalya. Many people still see it that way. Especially this year: an inflation rate of almost 80% in June alone makes holidays in Turkey cheaper than in almost any other country on the Mediterranean. But it's only cheap for tourists. But this enthusiasm is being put to the test. Turkey's development into an authoritarian state is putting off some visitors. The number of German holidaymakers is stagnating. This is particularly complained of by hoteliers and restaurateurs in Istanbul and the Antalya region. The low prices in Turkey are now also attracting many holidaymakers from other parts of the world. The Turkish Riviera is firmly in Russian hands. Arab tourists have discovered the Black Sea coast for themselves, and there are more Arabic advertising spaces in Istanbul's shopping streets every day. It seems like a turning away from the West, which frightens many liberal Turks. What does all this mean for the people who make a living from tourism? Are they still making ends meet? How are they adapting to the current situation? And how are German holidaymakers experiencing this development? "The Story" travels to the Black Sea and Mediterranean coasts, to Istanbul and Cappadocia. It shows how tourism in Turkey is dealing with the challenges, what they mean for the locals - and how much holiday enjoyment is possible for holidaymakers. ????
