Monumental testimonies of Roman culture have defied the test of time: the mighty Colosseum of El Jem, the ruins of the former metropolis of Carthage or the extensive excavation site of the settlement of Sufetula. The vibrant capital Tunis shows Islamic tradition and Western modernity: from the haggling traders in the narrow alleys of the oriental souk to the Art Nouveau facades of the magnificent Avenue Bourguiba. A trip takes you to Sidi Bou Saïd. The landscape is also diverse, from the fertile plains of Cap Bon to the desert region of Douz. Inland lie the holy city of Kairouan and the rock dwellings of Matmata. Along the Mediterranean coast, the beaches of Hammamet, Monastir and, last but not least, the island of Djerba lure visitors with their reasonable prices and plenty of sunshine.
