After the battle for the Scheldt estuary, when, except for Schouwen, all of Zeeland is liberated, Walcheren will remain under water for a long time. The sea has free rein through no fewer than four gaps. The gap at Westkapelle is created after two bombardments. One on 3 October, in which more than 150 people die and one on 17 October. But this gap is not enough to flood Walcheren. The dikes at Veere, Ritthem and Vlissingen are bombed that same month. Four gaps, through which the water flows back and forth every day.
