Werbung (unbezahlt) Did you know that the oldest city in Germany is not Cologne, not Mainz, and not even Augsburg, but Trier. The city is located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It was founded in 15 BC and then had the beautiful ancient Roman name "Augusta Treverorum". Trier is famous, first of all, for its monuments of the ancient Roman civilization: no other city in Germany has preserved such a large number of buildings from that era. In addition, in the 10th century, Trier received the long-awaited and important status of a trading city, thanks to which it grew rich and continued to develop even faster. The main feature of Trier is that it contains as many as eight architectural monuments, which, according to UNESCO, have the status of world historical and cultural heritage. The symbol of Trier is the Black Gate (Porta Nigra), built in 170 AD. This gate is considered to be the largest and best preserved ancient gate in the world.
