Did the West make mistakes in integrating the GDR? http://kurz.zdf.de/UbH1V/ But who can talk about mistakes when you look at the beautifully renovated East German cities? Take the city center of Leipzig, for example: a real feast for the eyes. The GDR's industry fared less well. The so-called Treuhandanstalt, or Treuhand for short, was responsible for this. It was founded in the late phase of the GDR and had the task of privatizing the GDR's state-owned companies according to the principles of the social market economy. The Treuhand was a state institution, but that did not stop it from taking the interests of private West German companies into account. This is clear from the example of the GDR company Foron: The Treuhand gave the company a grade of six. The strange thing about it: Foron had developed the first CFC-free refrigerator and had almost 100,000 pre-orders. The competition in the West could not have kept up with that. As a result, West German refrigerator manufacturers initiated a campaign of lies against the GDR company. Letters claimed that Foron's refrigerators were poisonous. So that's what you call a free market economy?
