Some residents of the Weesperplantsoen are fed up with the felling of 24 trees. The trees were cut down this morning to make the construction of the Namenmonument possible. 'Terrible, in these times with summers like this', said one resident. 'Hot, no air conditioning. And then cutting down those few trees in the city centre. When will a new tree grow just as big again? That takes twenty years. It's terrible, I'm really angry.' The resident is a member of a neighbourhood association that tried in vain to prevent the felling of the trees and the construction of the monument through a lawsuit. 'They are allowed to cut down trees and they do. But I can still find it terrible? It's terrible. We knew it, but it still hurts.' 'We live in a constitutional state', said another resident. 'But I don't think it's right. Really not. I'm not against the monument, but I am against the monument at this location. It's not nice and quiet to commemorate here, is it? With all that noise. I think it's really dramatic.' However, not all residents think the same. 'A few trees have to make way for a very beautiful monument. 24. And I believe 53 will be returned for that. So I think it's a good deal. Of course it's about something. 102,000 people who were murdered. So that pales in comparison to 24 trees.' Jacques Grishaver, the chairman of the Dutch Auschwitz Committee, was also present this morning. According to him, only a small part of the neighborhood is against the arrival of the monument on the Weesperplantsoen. 'Even in the student flat nearby there are people who are very much in favor of the monument. And on the canals too. The opponents remain a small group.' Grishaver is happy with the felling of the trees. 'This is the beginning, the start. After thirty years we have to be happy.' ❌ ❌ ❌ AT5 - Echt Amsterdams Nieuws Subscribe to our YouTube channel here: / at5amsterdam Tips or comments?
