Electricity, tram, and tunnel operations belonging to foreign companies were nationalized in 1939 and given their current identity under the name of Istanbul Electricity, Tram and Tunnel Operations General Directorate (IETT), and transferred to the municipality. Istanbul trams carried an average of 275,200 people a day in 1945, and the Üsküdar-Kadıköy trams carried 39,500 people. The passage of trams over the Galata Bridge was terminated in 1955. On March 16, 1955, the Anatolian Side Üsküdar and Area Tramway Operation (Üsküdar-Kadıköy Public Tramways Company) was also transferred to İETT. 35 One-third of the tram lines, which had begun to be ignored in Istanbul transportation since the second half of the 1950s, were dismantled as of 1957. Indeed, the trams, which had been providing service with 270 wagons on 56 lines in 1956 and 130 wagons on 16 lines in 1960,36 were completely removed from Istanbul on August 12, 1961 and from the Anatolian side on November 14, 1966. Buses and trolleybuses replaced the trams. The trolleybuses, which were ordered from the Ansaldo San Giorgio company in Italy in 1956-1957, entered service on May 27, 1961. The first trolleybus line was opened in 1961 between Eminönü and Topkapı. Trolleybus lines in Istanbul reached 90 km by 1965.37 In 1968, a trolleybus named Tosun, manufactured by İETT employees, entered service. Since trolleybuses were powered by double overhead power lines, they were stranded on the roads in the event of a power outage, vehicles stranded on the road caused traffic congestion and could not comply with the service schedules. For this reason, trolleybuses were completely removed from Istanbul traffic on July 16, 1984 and 75 trolleybuses were sold to the Izmir Municipality.
