A major metro project is nearing completion in the capital of Saudi Arabia. The Riyadh Metro is an ambitious project by the Saudis to make the capital an international business hub. Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is about to complete what may be the most high-tech and environmentally friendly public transport system in the world. The project, along with other welfare projects underway in the city, will improve the quality of life for its residents; this will lead to the city being ranked among the 100 most liveable and sustainable cities in the world. The Saudi government has invested $27 billion in the capital’s public transport network, which was built with the help of about a dozen Swedish companies. During the 2019 Stockholm Global Summit, the Riyadh Development Authority announced that it was ready to launch its metro and bus system just five years after the project began. It is the youngest public transport system in the world. With its 6 metro lines and 85 stations over 176 km, it will be the longest driverless transport network in the world. It will also include 80 bus routes over 1,900 km and 3,000 stations and stops. The project is nearing completion, 5 years - an unprecedentedly short construction period by world standards. The System itself is characterized by a number of high-tech and environmentally sustainable solutions. For example, the rolling stock is 98% recyclable. The uniqueness of this project is that the construction of the metro is carried out at one time. And if in all modern cities, be it Moscow, Paris, Tokyo or any other, the railway network is built gradually, proportionate to the increase in the number of residents, then in Riyadh the situation is different. The metro and auxiliary bus system in the country will be launched simultaneously, which should have the desired effect in a short time. The Riyadh Metro is one of the largest projects of this type in the world. The large-scale transport hub with a total length of 176 kilometers will combine a metro and a monorail: three railway lines will be underground and located in the city center, and three more will be overground. Three large construction consortiums are involved in the creation of the project, which includes companies from the USA, Germany, France, Italy, South Korea, India and Canada. British and Italian specialists were also involved in the design stage. Like many other cities, Riyadh faces the challenges of the 21st century: its population of almost 7 million people is expected to reach 8.3 million by 2030. Today, 89% of daily trips around the city are made by private cars, which makes it necessary to create a public transport network. “Completing a public transport system of this scale and complexity in such a short time is an unprecedented undertaking, but what’s truly rewarding is that it will improve the mobility of millions of residents while helping to make Riyadh one of the most sustainable and livable cities in the world.” The $27 billion investment in the public transport network will also improve productivity for the city’s residents, while delivering an excellent return on investment: every $1 spent will result in $3.4 in government revenue.
