Bologna Ravone was the first railway sorting yard for goods in Bologna, when around 1925 it was decided to separate this type of traffic from passenger traffic, since the Bologna Centrale station was close to collapse. It was located to the west, adjacent to the Centrale station and was connected to all the railway directions of the Bologna hub at the time, via: Bivio Santa Viola: for the Pistoia-Florence directions, for Milan and for Verona Raccordo Ravone and bivio Battiferro: for the Padova-Venice direction For Bologna Centrale for the Rimini-Ancona direction. From this period Bologna Ravone therefore only performed the functions of a goods sorting yard since it was connected with a short connection to the Bologna Arcoveggio yard, adjacent to the fruit and vegetable market in the historic location of via Aristotile Fioravanti, for which it mainly performed the sorting functions. Starting from the 80s, with the progressive decline of rail freight in favor of road freight, the station gradually entered until its complete closure in 1993. In 2019, DumBo (Bologna multifunctional urban district) was opened in the disused railway area, a space for the urban regeneration of the area hosting cultural and recreational events.
