When talking about overseas Chinese who immigrated to Thailand in the past, the stereotype of this group of people is usually that they came with nothing but a mat and a pillow, struggling and came by sailboat in the early Rattanakosin period. But in fact, the roots of the Chinese people can be traced back much longer than that. From Roots to Us takes everyone to follow the stories of the Chinese people in Chonburi and Rayong. What traces are there that hide their importance to those people and cities? The Chinese who came to live in Thailand are of many groups and languages, including Teochew, Hainanese, Cantonese, Hakka or Hakka. But today, they have blended in and become Thai-Chinese, living in every society and class. It may raise the question of how important knowing which Chinese group you are to your life is to your life, or whether knowing will help you understand your roots and help you answer questions like who you are and what your role is in society.
