The fishing method is normal jigging, but the rod is harder, the reel is bigger, the line is thicker, and the jig is heavier, making everything one step stronger and bigger. It is a relatively easy tuna fishing method to aim for. The peak season for tonjigi is about the end of November to early April. It can be earlier or later depending on the year, so it is difficult to say in general, but you can catch them around this time. In the early season, you can't catch many, but when you do catch them, they are big. From the middle to the latter half of the season, the size becomes smaller, but you can catch a lot of them. Of course, there are also some good-sized ones mixed in. Dragonflies are called by their size: Small ton (up to 10kg), medium ton (10kg to 20kg), and seed ton (over 20kg). The name seed ton comes from dragonflies that are large enough to reproduce. It seems that the name seed ton was shortened from "seed dragonflies". The basic way to lure a dragonfly with a tonjigi is to lure it slowly with a one-pitch jerk. The final jerk is large, creating a line slack so that the jig turns sideways and falls for a long time. The dragonfly will react at the moment the jig turns sideways or during the fall. A stiff jigging rod is best. It should be stiff enough to jerk a 300g jig. For reels, a 2000-class Shimano reel would be good. A 35-class Daiwa reel would be good. If possible, a PG (power gear) would be good. It will be much easier to reel the handle after you have set it. A reel that can hold at least 300m of PE3 is best. For spinning, use 8000. For electric jigging, Shimano 1000EJ or higher and Daiwa G300J or higher are good. For line, PE 3-4 and 80lb-100lb leader are good. When catching large fish, thicker is better. Depending on the tide, I use jigs up to 250-500g, but generally 300-400g should be fine.
