A recording of a lecture from the Fridays series, which took place live with the audience on May 6, 2022, on the topic: Man under pressure. Whether a person climbs to the stars or dives into the depths of the sea, he finds himself under pressure - and not only in a figurative sense. Astronauts, pilots, and mountaineers face low pressure and lack of oxygen, while divers face the overwhelming pressure of water masses. How does the human body react to such extreme conditions, and to what extent can it adapt to them? Can our blood boil in space? How deep into the ocean can we descend before the air itself becomes a deadly poison? How far can we push the boundaries of man, and why (not) do it? We will meet some of the daredevils thanks to whom we can answer these questions today, and we will also think about the future of conquering these extreme environments. Lecturer: RNDr. Tomáš Petrásek, PhD., was born in 1984 in Prague, graduated in biology from the Faculty of Science, Charles University, and currently works at the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the National Institute of Mental Health, where he researches the brain and behavior. In his free time, he is dedicated to popularizing astronomy and astrobiology. He is the author of the popular science series Vzdálené světy (together with Igor Duszko), dealing with the issue of exobiology, and the website of the same name. He entered the field of science fiction with the novella Poslední hlídka (in the anthology Mlok 2007, published separately in 2012) and the short stories Tvůrci (Kočas 2009) and Bensonové efekt (in the anthology Terra Nullius, 2015).
